Case in point: an hour ago, while taking a nap, I foolishly let the soundtrack play. When it got to this song, I was dreaming about being a part of a SWAT team (or something similar), and we were approaching a door at the far end of a long, wide corridor. When it started playing, my dream-self was utterly convinced that clowns would burst through the door and charge us, doing horrible things to us on the way. This went on for a while, until I recognised the loud, horrifying music as coming from the soundtrack.
Eureka. Instantly I pictured fluffy bunny rabbits running through the door instead, and poof! The horror went away. The bunnies did come through, but that's okay; no killer rabbits here.
Interestingly, from then on my dream took on an interesting twist - being now aware I was dreaming, I think I actually started controlling my own dream - shades of lucid dreaming there. It was fun until I had to wake up to continue writing my economics essay.
Still, those few minutes of mind-numbing, inescapable horror were intense. Like nothing else I'd ever felt before. Ugh.
To lighten the mood, a rather nicer song from the same soundtrack:
Incidentally, I really like the soundtrack; it's actually very good. It's just not bedtime listening material.
The movie Paprika, incidentally, is also excellent. If you don't have an aversion to anime, it is definitely worth a look. Ironically, it's about a dream-travelling super-agent who can travel through dreams with the aid of a high-tech device. Surreal.
Of anything in this world
There's nothing you can throw at me
That I haven't already heard
I'm just trying to find
A decent melody
A song that I can sing
In my own company
I never thought you were a fool
But darling look at you
You gotta stand up straight
Carry your own weight
These tears are going nowhere baby
You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And now you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better
Now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
I will not forsake
The colors that you bring
The nights you filled with fireworks
They left you with nothing
I am still enchanted
By the light you brought to me
I listen through your ears
Through your eyes I can see
And you are such a fool
To worry like you do
I know it's tough
And you can never get enough
Of what you don't really need now
My, oh my
You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Oh love, look at you now
You've got yourself stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm 'til you discover how deep
I wasn't jumping, for me it was a fall
It's a long way down to nothing at all
You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
Don't say that later will be better
Now you're stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if our way should falter
Along the stony pass
And if the night runs over
And if the day won't last
And if your way should falter
Along this stony pass
It's just a moment
This time will pass
1. REM - Everybody Hurts
REM has recorded hundreds of songs in their career, and they've got a few gems; I like this one, because - well. The lyrics are pretty, and the message is good (basically, "Don't commit suicide"). Sure, it's not subtle - in fact it's probably as unsubtle as it could get without Stipe actually singing, "Don't commit suicide," but for this particular issue perhaps subtlety would be missing the point.
2. REM - Imitation of Life
A very happy-sounding song that probably isn't half as happy as it sounds like; it's incredibly catchy though! Cinnamon!
This is brand new, actually, it came out perhaps a week ago. I like the new album I think. It's probably too unsubtle but it's good stuff. I think it's one of those CDs which grow on you.
4. Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me
Happy happy yay. Catchy, infectious, straightforward. Classic.
5. Yoko Kanno - The Egg & I
This one's from the Cowboy Bebop OST; can't remember where it appears. Jazzesque! Happy! Yay!
Sorry. Not really in the mood for any sort of in-depth analysis; just watching them scars heal is nice enough. No, not killing myself of course; if I really wanted to, I wouldn't BE here, I'd be dead. An inch from oblivion.
I've learned more about how a flesh wound heals than I ever knew in the last week though. Fascinating. Suspect regrets, eventually. The mind boggles.
Facebook profile link on the side, if you're of a mind to. I'm not sure; it cuts a bit closely (ha ha) to real life, but it's there. Facebook depresses me.
I suspect I'm more emo than I'd care to admit.
Stop getting me off track.
I mean it, there's a problem here.
This time it is for real...
how can I make myself more clear?
I never say quite what I mean,
and never mean quite what I say,
and how did that get out of me,
and what the hell did I mean to say?
This time it is for real.
This is a real emergency.
This time I swear it is the truth...
this must be dealt with urgently!
I never say quite what I mean,
and never mean quite what I say,
and how did that get out of me,
and what the hell did I mean to say?
There's a fire. There's a fire.
I really mean it now,
this time I swear I have not lied.
This isn't like the last time...
I swear to God I have not lied!
I never say quite what I mean,
and never mean quite what I say,
and how did that get out of me,
and what the hell did I mean to say?
There's a fire. There's a fire.
Just saw her tour-ending gig at the Apollo Hammersmith in London last night. WOW. (I should have brought my camera.) She was great. I loved the concert, overall. A few of her songs did put me half to sleep, but the good ones were rockin'. (Put Your Record On, the possibly upcoming cover of No Love Child) There was some real energy there - at one point some people got up and danced. And she got a standing ovation at the end.
I'm a reconverted fan. Might even actually buy her album.
Coffee, that is. More accurately, no more coffee after 9pm. Even if I'm falling asleep. It just means I won't be able to sleep later when I want to.
How do I know?
I had a cup at 10, and now it's 4:12 and I'm still awake. And I've got a busy day tomorrow. Grrr.
Oh, and I'm going to see Corinne Bailey Rae (Hammersmith Apollo, London). I wonder if cameras are allowed?
Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin' ev'rybody's in a play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day hey,hey
Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mister blue sky is living here today hey, hey
Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?
Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration, mister blue sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for
Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Ev'rybody smiles at you
Mister blue sky, mister blue sky
Mister blue sky
Mister blue, you did it right
But soon comes mister night creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I'll remember you this
I'll remember you this way
Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there mister blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Ev'rybody smiles at you
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
I met him in a crowded room
Where people go
To drink away their gloom
He sat me down and so began
The story of a charmless man
Educated the expensive way
He knows his claret from his beaujolais
I think he'd like to have been Ronnie Kray
But then nature didn't make him that way
He thinks he's educated,
airs those family shares
Will protect him that we will respect him
He moves in circles of friends
Who just pretend that they like him
He does the same to them, and when you put it all together
There's the model of a charmless man
He knows the swingers and their cavalry
Says he can get in anywhere for free
I began to go a little cross eyed
And from this charmless man
I just had to hide
He talks at speed he gets nose bleeds
He doesn't see his days
Are tumbling down upon him
And yet tries so hard to please
He's just so keen for you to listen
But no one is listening
And when you put it all together
There's the model of a charmless man
